Why Media Wrangler Only Works on Public Links
Published: September 18, 2026 by Andrew Apell
Media Wrangler only handles public links that open without login. That is not a bug : it is a safety boundary for you and for creators.
The incognito test
Paste the link in a private window with no login. If you see the post, it is public. If you see a login wall, the post is private, protected, age-gated or deleted. Media Wrangler will error on the second case.
| State | Incognito shows | Media Wrangler |
|---|---|---|
| Public | Video plays | Preview works |
| Protected/Private | Login required | Fails |
| Deleted / 404 | Not found | Fails |
| DRM / Paywall | Blocked | Fails |
Why we do not bypass
Bypassing login, DRM or subscription walls is not just a ToS violation : it can be an anti-circumvention issue. Media Wrangler never asks for your X or TikTok password, never scrapes private timelines and never uses broad app permissions. We fetch the public MP4 via the same CDN your browser would.
What to do instead
- Ask the poster to make the post public or send the original master file.
- Use X/TikTok native Share then Embed if you need to show a post on a site : embed is licensed.
- For Spaces/Lives, use screen capture in OBS : those are streaming, not static MP4.
See legal guide for copyright and ToS details.
